Bebars, Mi; Lasserre, G; Hoai, Tl.
Annually exploited communities from the Nile delta and two nearby lagoons (Manzalah and Edkou) were monitored from 1962 to 1989. The changes in community structure were analysed as a function of two events: fishing pressure growth (motorized fishing vessels) which increased by a factor of 19 between 1952 and 1962; and the construction of the Aswan Dam, which was built between 1965 and 1969, reducing the flow of the Nile by 90 %. Before the construction of the dam, increased sea fishing pressure led to a decline in landings from 33,832 tons in 1962 to 8,522 tons in 1969, but with no structural change in the exploited community. However, following completion of the dam in 1969, the community structure changed and a significant correlation was detected...

Derolez, Valerie.
The Thau lagoon is one of the largest Mediterranean coastal lagoons and it supports many uses such as shellfish farming and fishing, priority activities of the territory, and more recently recreational activities. Since the 1960s, the increase in anthropogenic inputs, linked to the sudden growth of the population, led to microbiological contaminations of shellfish and degraded status of the lagoon, with negative impacts at sanitary, ecological and socio‐economic levels. Since the 1970s, the considerable work carried out on the waste water system on the watershed has made it possible to restore the lagoon, which then began an oligotrophication trajectory, a process that has still few been studied in coastal environments. Subject to a variety of pressures...

Coastline changes and sedimentation related with the opening of an artificial channel: the Valo Grande Delta, SE Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
MAHIQUES,MICHEL M. DE; FIGUEIRA,RUBENS C.L.; ALVES,DANIEL P.V.; ITALIANI,DIANA M.; MARTINS,CRISTINA C.; DIAS,JOÃO M.A..
The role played by human activity in coastline changes indicates a general tendency of retreating coasts, especially deltaic environments, as a result of the recent trend of sea level rise as well as the blockage of the transfer of sediments towards the coast, especially due to the construction of dams. This is particularly important in deltaic environments which have been suffering a dramatic loss of area in the last decades. In contrast, in this paper, we report the origin and evolution of an anthropogenic delta, the Valo Grande delta, on the south-eastern Brazilian coast, whose origin is related to the opening of an artificial channel and the diversion of the main flow of the Ribeira de Iguape River. The methodology included the analysis of coastline...

Contribution of climate variability to occurrences of anoxic crises 'malaigues' in the Thau lagoon (southern France) ArchiMer
Harzallah, Ali; Chapelle, Annie.
The Thau lagoon, located in southern France, suffers episodically in summer from anoxic crises known as 'malaigues'. Such crises mostly occur under warm conditions and low winds. In this paper we investigated effects of local weather conditions (air temperature, wind speed and precipitation over southern France), and two climate oscillations (the North Atlantic Oscillation and the El Ni (n) over tildeo Oscillation) on malaigue occurrences based on 33-year data series and dates when malaigues appeared. The study shows that the probability of occurrence of malaigues increases with increasing temperature and decreasing winds in August both mostly associated to the high phase of an index of North Atlantic Oscillation. Malaigues are found to be frequently...

Since spat mortality events that were firstly detected in 2008, Mediterranean shellfish industry seeks to exploit the Pacific oyster spat from lagoon natural recruitment. The CRCM, Cepralmar and Ifremer developed accordingly a research project named PRONAMED Phase 1 and 2 - 2010-2014, in order to define the economic potential of spatfall and improve knowledge of the reproductive cycle of Crassostrea gigas in this specific environmental context. The results of the past three year‘s study (2012, 2013, 2014) showed that broodstock have the ability to provide larvae after sexual maturation and spawning. A coincidence was noted between moon phase (new and full moon) and spawnings with an amplifying effect of storms on the intensity of spawning (Ubertini et al....

Does coastal lagoon habitat quality affect fish growth rate and their recruitment? Insights from fishing and acoustic surveys ArchiMer
Brehmer, Patrice; Laugier, Thierry; Kantoussan, J.; Galgani, Francois; Mouillot, D..
Ensuring the sustainability of fish resources necessitates understanding their interaction with coastal habitats, which is becoming ever more challenging in the context of ever increasing anthropogenic pressures. The ability of coastal lagoons, exposed to major sources of disturbance, to provide resources and suitable habitats for growth and survival of juvenile fish is especially important. We analysed three lagoons with different ecological statuses and habitat quality on the basis of their eutrophication and ecotoxicity (Trix test) levels. Fish abundances were sampled using fishing and horizontal beaming acoustic surveys with the same protocols in the same year. The relative abundance of Anguilla anguilla, Dicentrarchus labrax or the Mugilidae group was...

Effects of seasonal dynamics in a Zostera noltii meadow on phosphorus and iron cycles in a tidal mudflat (Arcachon Bay, France) ArchiMer
Deborde, Jonathan; Abrill, Gwenael; Mouret, Aurelia; Jezequel, Didier; Thouzeau, Gerard; Clavier, Jacques; Bachelet, Guy; Anschutz, Pierre.
A study was conducted in Arcachon Bay, France, to determine the effect of seasonal dynamics in a Zostera noltii meadow on P and Fe cycles in the superficial sediments of a tidal mudflat. The redox-sensitive Fe particulate pool and associated P in the root zone showed a seasonal variation following the growth and decay of Z. noltii biomass, with a maximum content during the growth period. In comparison, the bare sediments did not show significant seasonal changes. A dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) uptake was measured from the water column to the sediment in vegetated sediments, whereas a net DIP efflux was observed in the unvegetated sediments. During the growth period, the formation of an iron oxihydroxide-rich zone occurred and acted as a trap for...

Environmental and subtidal fish assemblage relationships in two different brazilian coastal estuaries BABT
Vendel,Ana Lúcia; Bouchereau,Jean-Luc; Chaves,Paulo de Tarso.
The general structure and organization of the shallow water (<1.5 m) fish assemblages were studied in two southern Brazilian ecosystems, a bay and a lagoon, under different marine or continental influences. The abiotic factors were measured to define the hydrology of the sites and the biotic descriptors were evaluated to characterize the assemblage structures. Transparency, salinity and organic matter were the abiotic factors which best distinguished the sites. A total richness of 69 species was observed. Ecological guilds, density, diversity and evenness indices values were different at each site. The hydrodynamism and geomorphology determined the structure and the organization of the fish assemblages in these shallow waters. It was observed that the...

Fish as bioindicators of brackish ecosystem health: integrating biomarker responses and target pollutant concentrations ArchiMer
Corsi, I; Mariottini, M; Sensini, C; Lancini, L; Focardi, S.
Biological responses and contaminant levels in biological tissues were investigated in fish specimens of grass goby (Zosterisessor ophiocephalus) collected in spring 2000 in a moderately polluted brackish ecosystem, the Orbetello lagoon (southern coast of Tuscany, Italy). The complexity of harmful effects that contaminants may cause in fish over time was assessed. General condition indices (somatic liver index, and gonadal somatic index), cytochrome P450 enzymes, acetylcholinesterase activity and ovarian morphology were integrated with the content of organochlorines (OCs-hexachlorobenzene, DDTs and polychlorinated biphenyls) in liver and ovaries and p-nonylphenol (NP) and lower ethoxylate (NPE(1-2)) content in muscle and ovaries as well.
Millet, B.
The wind-driven flow in the closed bassin de Thau is reproduced with a two-dimensional numerical model of horizontal ciruclation using an Alternate Direction Implicit scheme. A stochastic analysis of frequencies on a yearly time scale of the velocity fields computed in the model and a spatial and stochastic treatment of the term (H2 y2), similar to an effective coefficient of horizontal dispersion by shear effect are presented. This approach will allow the delineation, in a stochastic manner, of the main structures of the circulation in the lagoon and the spatial heterogeneity of its ecohydrodynamic features. Two attempts of analogical research are presented, with sorne examples of the spatial structure in the phytoplankton biomass and the map of the...

Impact assesment of Cyclone Sally on the almost atoll of Aitutaki (cook Islands) by remote sensing ArchiMer
Loubersac, Lionel; Dahl, Arthur; Collote, Pascal; Lemaire, Olivier; D'Ozouville, Laurent.
Damage from tropical cyclones can have major consequences for coral reef structure and ecology, as well as for human communities and human uses of coral reef resources. Remote sensing with high resolution multispectral satellite images can be used to asses large scale cyclone damages on coral reef areas. SPOT images of the almost atoll of AITUTAKI (Cook Islands) taken in june 1986 and february 1987 after the passage of Cyclone Sally near the island in january, were transformed and subjected to a textural analysis, and then compared to asses damage on the reefs and lagoon.New shallow sand and rubble deposits showed increased reflectance, while lower reflectance seemed associated with damage to reef structure, scouring in the lagoon, deposits of terrestrial...

Lagune de Salses - Leucate. I - Analyse bibliographique. ArchiMer
Ladagnous, Helene; Le Bec, Claude.
Subjected to multiple modifications which are responsible for important disruption in the functionning of the lagoon ecosystem during the last decenies, this lagoon is one of the most important sites for the region economy. The aim of this study is to propose a knowledges synthesis utilizable for a future fitting and management water plan. In fact, many studies realized during the last years are obsolete or uncompleted to explain the present state. Hydrogeololical studies, the most important, are not completed to understand the karst-lagoon relations. The wind-driven flow in the closed bassin, must be considered to explain biogeochemical process and the sewage discharges dispersal in the lagoon. Numerical models, with new physicochemical data, appear to be...

Lagune de Salses-Leucate. II.- Contamination bactériologique et approche physico-chimique ArchiMer
Ladagnous, Helene; Le Bec, Claude.

Sometimes, the monitoring network results provide an inhibited point of view to understand bacteriological process on the field. We must go further in contamination spatial or temporal structures to obtain a global picture. At Leucate, if a part of bacteriological contamination is correlated to precipitations, the main environmental factor to explain local variability seems to be the monthly variability population. This fact, completed by a spatial design, reveals a concentric gradient in the shellfish farrning area. Sorne hypothesis are discussed to explain this contamination (resurgence, aquatic birds droppings, ...)

Larval connectivity of pearl oyster through biophysical modelling; evidence of food limitation and broodstock effect ArchiMer
Thomas, Yoann; Dumas, Franck; Andrefouet, Serge.
The black-lip pearl oyster (Pinctada margaritifera) is cultured extensively to produce black pearls, especially in French Polynesia atoll lagoons. This aquaculture relies on spat collection, a process that experiences spatial and temporal variability and needs to be optimized by understanding which factors influence recruitment. Here, we investigate the sensitivity of P. margaritifera larval dispersal to both physical and biological factors in the lagoon of Ahe atoll. Coupling a validated 3D larval dispersal model, a bioenergetics larval growth model following the Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) theory, and a population dynamics model, the variability of lagoon-scale connectivity patterns and recruitment potential is investigated. The relative contribution of...

Limnological patterns in northern pantanal lagoons BABT
Bleich,Monica Elisa; Silveira,Roberto Moraes Lima; Nogueira,Flávia Maria Barros.
The aim of this work was to correlate the limnological patterns recorded among ten lagoons in the northern part of the Pantanal of Mato Grosso with some aspects of the lagoons related to their physical and biological characteristics. Some lagoon characteristics, such as connection with the river and the presence of floating macrophytes were important to group similar lagoons into categories. Attempts were also made to determine which kind of the nutrients could be limiting phytoplankton productivity in the lagoons of the northern Pantanal. Data was collected in nine lagoons during the flooding stage in January 2004, and nutrient and chlorophyll a was followed in a tenth lagoon from June 2004 to October 2004. The phytoplankton biomass was significantly...

This study presents a specifically designed Mercury module in a coupled benthic-pelagic reactive-transport model - Bottom RedOx Model (BROM) that allows to study mercury (Hg) biogeochemistry under different conditions. This module considers the transformation of elemental mercury (Hg(0)), divalent mercury (Hg(II)) and methylmercury (MeHg). The behavior of mercury species in the model is interconnected with changes of oxygen, hydrogen sulfide, iron oxides, organic matter, and biota. We simulated the transformation and transport of Hg species in the water column and upper sediment layer under five different scenarios, combining various levels of oxygenation and trophic state in the Berre lagoon, a shallow eutrophic lagoon of the French Mediterranean coast...

Patterns of habitat segregation among large fishes in a Venezuelan floodplain river Neotropical Ichthyology
Layman,Craig A.; Winemiller,Kirk O..
Distribution and abundance of large fishes (SL>100 mm) in the río Cinaruco, a floodplain river in the Venezuelan llanos, were examined by gill net sampling in four habitat types: sand banks, backwater creeks, floodplain lagoons, and river channel. Sampling was standardized using nets (25 m x 2 m) of three mesh sizes set for 24-h periods. Based on data from >10,000 hours of gill netting over three years, there were significant differences in assemblage composition among the four habitats. Pair-wise comparisons suggested differences in assemblage composition between all pairs of habitats except creeks and lagoons. Differences in assemblage composition likely arose from species-specific habitat affinities. For example, 21 taxa were collected from both...
